Billy Joe "Bubba" Large former long time resident of Knox City, Texas, and most recently of Azle, Texas, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 23, 2014, surrounded by his family. Mr. Large was 71.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 28, 2014 at the Foursquare Church in Knox City. Burial, with Military Honors, will take place immediately following the service at Knox City Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. A visitation is planned for Wednesday evening, August 27 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home located at 210 Avenue A.
Billy Joe was born July 28, 1943, in Knox City to Bessie Mae and Eli Dell Large. He graduated from Knox City High School in 1961 and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. Billy Joe was honorably discharged on March 4, 1967, after 2 years of service. He returned to Knox City where he married Linda Kay James on June 1, 1968. Billy and Linda remained in Knox City where Billy worked for more than 30 years as a pumper and roustabout in the oilfield.
After retirement, he and his devoted wife, Linda Kay moved to Azle, Texas to be close to their two boys. Billy Joe will be remembered by all for his love of old cars, collecting, karaoke, and his sense of humor. He will be remembered by his family for his generous spirit and his deep devotion to his wife, sons, and grandchildren. Not to mention, the over-the-top Christmas decorations and Easter egg hunts. All that knew him, loved him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Eli Dell and Bessie Mae Large.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda Kay (James) Large; his two sons, Billy Wayne and wife Lisa, and their children, Lindsey and Kelsey; and Aaron Dell and his wife Kristen, and their children Lucas and Riley; 2 brothers, Glen Dale Large and Eddie Dean Large; and sister, Bessie Alene Webb; and numerous nieces and nephews.
