C.A. "Bud" Turnbow, 89, of Haskell, Texas passed away February 1, 2013 at Haskell Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Haskell, Texas and burial in Willow Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. A visitation will be at the funeral home Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Bud was born in Howenwauld, Tennessee, June 21, 1923 to Jeff "J.D." and Mattie Ann Beck Turnbow and moved to Weinert, Texas. He married Jo Evelyn (Jewitt) Turnbow May 23, 1942 in Paris, Texas. He was a World War II United States Navy veteran and served as a federal officer in Pearl Harbor for three years. Bud had a car business in Honolulu from 1946 to 1949. He came back to Texas as a farmer and rancher and moved to Haskell in 1964. He ran for County Commissioner in 1974 and served for 28 years.
Bud was very civic minded and served in many capacities. He supervised the building of the Senior Citizen Center and the Emergency Ambulance Building; he was chairman of the buildings and grounds for 27 years. He was also responsible for the up-keep of the library. He was the building inspector for the Civic Center and served on the board for many years. He was the president of the Haskell County Fair in 1977 and vice president for 12 years; he remained on the board until he retired. He served as chairman of the Board of Senior Citizen Center. He was an active member of the Lion's Club. Bud was a member of First Baptist Church where he was President of the Business Men's Sunday school class for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Evelyn; a daughter, Nancy Jo Johnston; a granddaughter, Traci Jo Walker; three great grandchildren, Taylor Walker, John Leslie Walker, and Kelly Ray Walker; a brother, Bob Turnbow; and two sisters, Jeffie Stapp and Jessie Couch.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and five sisters.
