David Jackson Gilleland, 84, whose family history originated in Haskell, Texas, passed away peacefully at his residence in College Station, Texas, Saturday, February 20, 2016. A Graveside Celebration of Jack's life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Willow Cemetery in Haskell, Texas under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Tuesday evening, Feb 23, 2015, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home located at 304 N. 2nd Street, Haskell, Texas.
Jack was born May 3, 1931, in Haskell, Texas to Estle and Jewel (Josselet) Gilleland. Jack served in the United States Airforce for 4 years. He married Dawn LaCille (Clifton) on June 10, 1951 in Haskell, Texas. He attended Texas A&M University where he graduated in 1957 with a BA degree in Agriculture Education.
Jack and his wife, Dawn, moved from College Station to Tulia, Texas where they farmed and ranched for nearly 21 years. They were members of the First United Methodist Church of Tulia. Beginning in 1976 Jack and Dawn returned home to Haskell, Texas to continue the farming and ranching of the family estate in Haskell, County in addition to Jack becoming a Rural Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service. They were members of the First United Methodist Church of Haskell.
Jack, retired in 2001, at the age of 70 after he secured season ticket to attend all the Texas Aggie football games and found a house near the bus route so he could avoid traffic and easily attend all games. He considered these years, the best in his life.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Estle and Jewel Gilleland.
Jack is survived by his wife, Dawn Gilleland: Son, David Jackson Gilleland, Jr, of Haskell; Daughter, Deborah Gilleland Lenderman and her husband, Ron, of Roswell, Georgia; Son, Gary Gilleland and his wife Amy, of Elgin, Oklahoma; Daughter, Donna Gilleland Smith and her husband Donny, of Baird, Texas. 9 grandchildren and 11 Great Grand Children with two more on the way.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given in Jack's name to Alzheimer's Association, or Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for children.
