Born on August 18, 1940, in Victoria, Texas, to Alton and Fae (Franklin) Springs, Dave's early life was spent in San Antonio. In 1945 his mom married Fred W. Hughes who became Dave's step-dad and reared him from the age of five. As his step-dad was in the military, the family moved many times in his early years.
Dave was a graduate of Rule High School where he served as class president in 1958. He was active in sports and academics, especially playing football. After graduating in 1958, he joined the Navy where he trained naval and marine pilots in instrument ratings. Following the Navy he attended RETS Electronic School in Miami, Florida graduating with honors. Dave's ambition was to become a commercial airline pilot. He earned his private license and was accumulating hours when Eastern Air Lines offered him a management position in a new venture -- the Eastern Travel Club. Dave led this effort for many years traveling all over the Caribbean, South America, Europe and the U.S. He retired from Eastern after twenty years after which he had numerous and varied jobs. Most significant of these was the raising and training of horses.
Dave enjoyed people and loved his family. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion and supported these groups throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alton Springs, mother Fae (Franklin) Hughes, step-father Fred Hughes, and sister Kay (Springs) Evans.
He is survived by his brother Mike Hughes and wife Marilyn of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his niece Karla (Evans) Sheridan and husband John of Miami, Florida; his niece Linda (Evans) Null of Raeford, North Carolina; his nephew William Hughes of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his niece Rachael Hughes of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three grand nephews; three grand-nieces and a host of friends in Texas, Florida and Ohio.
Known for his charm and engaging personality, along with his sharp wit, Dave was an independent thinker and friend to all.
