Delbert Arville Hayes, 90, passed away early Wednesday morning, June 6, 2012 at Knox County Hospital in Knox City. Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 9, 2012 at O'Brien Baptist Church with Bro. Jim Reid and Rev. Shane Kendrix officiating. Burial will be at O'Brien Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Friday evening, June 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Knox City.
Delbert Hayes was born west of Knox City on April 17, 1922 to John Wesley and Hettie Cathrine (Vance) Hayes. On November 3, 1942 he entered the U.S. Army where during his 3 year enlistment he toured the Philippines; Asia, Australia and also was stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Delbert honorably received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars; Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 Bronze Stars; Good Conduct Medal; Victory Ribbon; 5 Overseas Service Bars; and 1 Service Stripe. Delbert was Honorably Discharged on November 14, 1945 as a Staff Sergeant and returned home to Knox City where he returned to farming.
Delbert married Hazel Virginia Tate on November 9, 1949. They resided in O'Brien for 68 years where Delbert served on the O'Brien school board, O'Brien CO-OP gin board; was a 30 year member of the American Legion and served many years on the O'Brien Cemetery board. Hazel preceded him in death on July 26, 1992.Also preceding Delbert in death is his son, Rayland Hayes who passed away December 8, 1994; his father John Wesley Hayes who passed on October 12, 1965 and mother, Hettie Hayes who passed on December 9, 1965; his brother, J.W. Hayes, Jr.; and sisters, Deloures Page, Wanda Brooks, and Felda Wilson; and a daughter-in-law, Mona Studer Hayes.
Survivors include his son, Delbert Ray Hayes of Seymour; daughter, Pam Reed and husband Mark of Munday; 3 granddaughters, Misty Tucker and her husband Spencer of Seymour, Amber Reed and husband Logan Burdino of Boulder, Colorado, and Brooke Hayes of Lubbock; great-grandchildren, Blayne and Zayne Styles of Muenster, Texas, Sidney, Slade and Creed Tucker of Seymour, Texas, and Korbyn Hayes of Lubbock; brother, John Hayes and wife Kathleen of Amarillo; brother-in-law, Charles Tate of Seymour; special friend,Nettie Lee of Anson and her daughters, Rhonda Weaver of Hamlin, and Donna Lee Shipp of Abilene.
Friends are welcome to gather at Pam's home, 1661 W. Main in Munday to visit with Delbert's family.
