Don Flippin, of Haskell, passed from this world Sunday morning, August 25, 2024 surrounded by family. During his 88 years, he was loved by many and known as "Coach," "Flip" and "Papa."
Don was born February 10, 1936 in Colorado City, Texas to Theodore Noel and Linnie Doyle Flippin. He graduated from Colorado City High School where he played football and basketball. He went on to play football at McMurry University where he earned his coaching degree. He was drafted in the Army in 1959 and served until 1961. While stationed in Germany, he played football for the Army. After being honorably discharged, he began his 40 year coaching career in which his teams won numerous championships and he earned numerous awards.
Don is survived by his wife, Lynda, of 44 years. Together, they had 6 children: Kirk Flippin and Missy of New Braunfels, Lane Flippin and wife Angela of Schertz, Mike New and wife Teresa of Haskell, Lisa Teague and husband Jeff of Haskell, Vickie Stafford and husband Jim of Canyon, and Joey Kimbrough and wife Tammy of Haskell along with 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren plus a fat dog named BJ. He also left behind a whole host of students and friends along the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers; Theodore Noel, Jr., Billy, and Marion, and one sister, Loma O'Neal.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 1 pm at the Haskell High School Performing Arts Center under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Don Flippin to the athletic department of either Haskell High School or Stamford High School. May your contribution have the same impact on others that Coach had on you.
