Harvie "Donald" Griffis, age 74, lifetime resident of Weinert, Texas, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2014, at Hendricks Medical Center in Abilene, Texas.
Donald was born May 7, 1940 in Haskell, Texas to Harvie Griffis and Lenora Garrett Griffis. He graduated from Weinert High School in 1958, attended North Texas State University briefly and returned to Weinert where he has been a farmer for 67 years. He was the owner/manager of Griff's Gin & Cotton Module Hauling since 1975. In addition, he was co-owner of Circle 7 Grain Company.Weinert was his home and he loved serving his community. He has served many roles which include: City Council for 30+years, current Mayor, Weinert VFD and many more. He married Gracie Reid Griffis on January 24, 1960 at the First Assembly of God Church in Haskell, Texas.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Harvie and Lenora Griffis, his 3 sisters, Myrle Alexander, Ruth Langford, and Bennie Horan.
His remembrance will remain alive by his wife, Gracie Griffis, his daughter, Derinda Larned and husband, Johney Larned of New Braunfels, TX, his daughter, Donna Waggoner and husband, Randy Waggoner of Haskell, TX and his daughter, Darla Lane and husband, Lee Lane of New Braunfels, TX. He is also survived by his 7 grandchildren, Trey, Mackenzie and Dylan Larned of New Braunfels, Aaron and Garrett Waggoner of Haskell, and Kaylee and Weston Lane of New Braunfels, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Griffis are his 5 grandsons, Trey and Dylan Larned, Aaron and Garrett Waggoner and Weston Lane. Also, Jack Rueffer, Wayne Hutchinson and Raul Mexicano. Honorary pallbearers are Elmer Adams, Bobby Raynes, Sylverio Escamilla and the Class of 1958.
Donald, Don, Duck, dad and gramps was dearly loved by his family and friends. He left a legacy of being known to have quick wit, a wonderful sense of humor, and being kind, generous and loving.
Services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Weinert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, 2014 with Rev. Dan Bullock officiating. Interment will take place at Weinert Cemetery in Weinert under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Smith Family Funeral Homes in Haskell, TX.
