Dorothy Faye Spikes, 87, longtime resident of Benjamin, Texas, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016, at Seymour Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Seymour, Texas. Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday morning, July 21, 2016, at Benjamin Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Wednesday evening, July 20, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Knox City, Texas located at 210 N Ave A.
Dorothy was born October 23, 1928, in Archer City, Texas, to Oscar Campbell and Myra (Pennington) Campbell. She graduated from Wichita Falls High School and on August 5, 1949, married Bill Spikes in Odessa, Texas. In 1950, they moved to Colorado Springs and lived there until 1955 to return to Benjamin, Texas. Three years later they moved to Eagle Nest, New Mexico, and lived there until 1969 when they moved to Wray, Colorado. Bill and Dorothy eventually moved to Byers, Colorado until 1980 when they moved back to Benjamin, Texas to make their permanent home.
She was a dedicated mother and homemaker. Dorothy was involved with the kids by being a 4-H leader and active in many community events related to school and civics. She helped to organize a mounted drill team that performed at rodeos and other events in northeast New Mexico. Dorothy was a talented artist in many endeavors including pencil sketches, weaving, quilting and knitting. She was a very good seamstress and did a lot with her hands. Although, she did work outside the home, her main attention was on her kids and maintaining a home.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Myra (Pennington) Campbell and her husband, Bill Spikes who passed away in February of 1999.
Dorothy is survived by her three sons, Rusty Spikes and wife Janis of Archer City, Texas, Ty Spikes of Huntsville, Texas, and Guy Spikes and wife Donna of Seymour, Texas; one daughter, Penny Eaton of Benjamin, Texas; nine grandchildren, Sammi, Blue, Tag, Matthew, Sarah, Kendra, Helen, Crystal and Chris; and six great-grandchildren.
