Elizabeth "Nixie" Davis Cooper

Elizabeth (Nixie) Davis Cooper, 92, of Waco, Texas, passed away August 15, 2013. Nixie was a long time resident of Throckmorton, Texas.

She was born November 5, 1920, to John T. Davis, Sr. and Annette Elizabeth Howsley Davis. Both parents were from pioneer families of Throckmorton County. Nixie attended Throckmorton schools and at age 16 was valedictorian of her high school class and attended Southern Methodist University. Nixie married Durward Wesley Cooper on May 29, 1939. After living a short time in Breckenridge, Texas, they returned to make their home in Throckmorton. Following Durward's death in September 1988, Nixie moved to Waco, Texas.

Nixie was an active member of numerous church and community organizations. She was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Throckmorton where she served as a Sunday school teacher, organist, and a member of the Council on Ministries, Parsonage Committee, and United Methodist Women. She also served on the Throckmorton ISD school board. In Waco, she attended and supported Woodway First United Methodist Church, volunteered at Providence Hospital and Meals on Wheels, and was a member of Hamilton House. Her hobbies included oil painting, needlework, bridge, reading, crossword puzzles, cooking, and entertaining.

Nixie is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, and her three brothers, John T. Davis, Jr., Archie E. Davis, and William H. Davis.

Survivors include her children, Anne Pruett of Waco, Jean Ashton and husband, Jim, of Archer City, and Glenn Cooper and wife, Belinda, of Throckmorton, eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in Throckmorton, Texas, with the Rev. Mike Schafer officiating. Interment will follow at the Throckmorton Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 19, 2013, at the funeral home in Throckmorton.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Throckmorton and the Library Fund of Throckmorton ISD.
