Emory Earl Smith
1927-2013
Emory Earl Smith, long-time citizen of Haskell, died of natural causes on Wednesday morning, November 27, 2013. He was 86 years old.
He graduated from Haskell High School on May 31, 1945, his 18th birthday. Two days later, Earl reported for active duty in the United States Navy and served for the remainder of World War II. After his discharge he attended Texas A&M and graduated in 1950. Afterward, Earl worked at various jobs until he realized his calling and began his 26-year career in the Air Force, where he served in both the Korean War and Vietnam.
Following his military career, he taught Air Force Junior ROTC for 5 years in Columbia, South Carolina. This allowed him to share his military experience and inspire young students. Teaching was a fulfilling end to his service to his country. He retired in 1976.
Earl was a devoted and loving family man, and committed to his community.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Pat Smith; his daughter and son-in-law Mona and Richard Rejino; and his grandchildren Maggie and Adam, all from Dallas. Earl is also survived by his sons and daughter in-laws, Bill and Judi, Scott and Pat, Kelly and Amy, all from Wilmington, North Carolina. He also has a daughter Susan, 9 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
The funeral will take place at Cornerstone Baptist Church on Saturday November 30th at 10:00 am. The funeral will be followed by a military burial at Willow Cemetery.
