Clem Eugene Rhoads, longtime resident of Rule, Texas passed away Friday evening, October 25, 2013 at Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Mr. Rhoads was 79. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Rule with Rev. Scott Hensley officiating. Burial will take place following the services at Rule Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Monday evening, October 28, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Rule located at 600 Robins Avenue.
Eugene was born in Judd, Texas to Lillian (Mauldin) Rhoads Powell and Isaac Rhoads on August 18, 1943. He married Shirley Schonerstedt in Ada, Oklahoma on August 8, 1953. He was a member of the Rule Chamber of Commerce, Rule Volunteer Fire Department, Rule Booster Club, Lions Club, and the National Guard. Eugene enjoyed reading, watching football, hunting, fishing, and playing dominoes.
A true and dedicated member of the community, Eugene was chosen Rule Man of the Year in 1981 and then again in 1996. He also received Booster of the Year Award in 1983 and 1984. His commitment and loyalty to the area will visibly be missed.
Eugene retired from West Texas Utilities in the service department and the local and area manager. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rule where he spent many years as an usher.
He is preceded in death by his father, Isaac Rhoads; mother, Lillian Rhoads Powell; step-father, M.L. Powell; and his sister, Joyce Callahan.
Eugene is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley of Rule; 2 daughters, Theresa Briles and husband Eddie of Haskell, Linda Kittley and husband Wes of Lubbock; 2 sons, Leonard Rhoads and wife Sherry of Georgetown, Texas, and Mike Rhoads of Rule.
In addition, he is survived by his 10 grandchildren, Brandi Beard and husband Jon, Jason Briles and wife Jennifer, Jonathan Kittley, Chris Kittley, Zach Kittley, Haley Rhoads, Jacob Rhoads, Ty Rhoads, Tate Rhoads, and Levi Rhoads; 8 great-grandchildren, Trinity and Brieley Anthony, Peyton Kittley, Braylee, Brenna and Brett Briles, and Kash Beard; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
If desired, memorials can be made in Eugene's name to the First Baptist Church of Rule, Rule VFD, Briles Scholarship Fund, or favorite charity.
Serving as Eugene's pallbearers are his grandsons.
