Florence Evelyn Turnbow Larned

Florence Evelyn Turnbow Larned, 87, longtime Haskell resident and artist passed away Sunday, Nov.25, 2012 at Stamford Memorial Hospital in Stamford TX.
Visitation with the family will be at Smith Family Funeral Home in Haskell on Thursday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 30th at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Haskell TX with Rev. Jim McCurley and Rev. Troy Culpepper officiating. Interment will follow at Willow Cemetery in Haskell TX.

Florence was born on the John Jones Ranch in Sweetwater TX on June 27, 1925 to parents, Melvin and Mae Bell Wheeler Turnbow. She married John Larned on Sept. 27, 1941 in Haskell TX and together they had four children.

Mrs. Larned was a member of the First Baptist Church of Haskell TX and for many years taught children's Sunday school. She was a founding member of the Brazos West Art Association of Haskell TX and instructed art classes from her home studio. Her media included oil on canvas and china painting. Florence also had a passion for her hobby of crochet and gifted all family and friends with her crocheted wash cloths.
Florence possessed a very unique sense of humor and vivacious style that enhanced her colorful personality and brought a smile to everyone she encountered. She had an instant grasp of wise old sayings that would always lift up the conversation. She was known affectionately as "Sanner" by her siblings and she loved to dress in the color purple with all of her finery.

Florence is survived by a daughter, Shirley Story with daughter-in-law, Dannielle Story both of Wichita Falls TX; two sons, Johney Larned Jr. and wife, Derinda of New Braunfels TX, and Tim Larned and partner, Luis Olivarez of Haskell TX; three sisters, Anita Leggett of Abilene TX, Loretta Hatfield of Haskell TX, and Virginia (Ginny) Trussell of Strawn TX; three brothers, Melvin (Bud) Turnbow of Haskell TX, W.J. (Dub) Turnbow of St. Roberts MO, and Gary Turnbow of Haskell TX. She leaves behind a beautiful heritage of family that also includes 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren as well as two very special friends, Kathy Henderson of Haskell TX and Mary Menchaca of Rule TX.

Florence was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John Larned; a daughter, Betty Sue Wolfe, wife of Erby Wolfe of Potosi TX; a grandson, Craig Gordon Story of Arlington TX; and a sister, Gearldine Furrh of Eloy AZ.

Serving as pall bearers are Leonard Menchaca Jr., Broc Baird, Trey Larned, Dylan Larned, Jeremy Wolfe, Landon Wolfe, and Levi Wolfe.

Memorials may be given to Hendrick Hospice or First Baptist Church of Haskell, Texas.
