Garrett Fredrick Spitzer of Haskell, Texas passed away Wednesday morning, November 13, 2013 at Haskell Memorial Hospital in Haskell. Mr. Spitzer was 99.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Haskell with Rev. David White officiating. Burial will take place immediately following the services at Old Glory Cemetery in Old Glory under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. A visitation is planned for Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Haskell located at 304 N. 2nd Street.
One of nine children, Garrett was born October 16, 1914 in Sagerton, Texas to Lillie (Wendeborn) and Friedrich Wilhelm Spitzer. He married Odine Wienke in Sagerton on April 19, 1936. Mrs. Spitzer passed away June 17, 1993 after 57 years of marriage. On February 27, 1994 he married Martha Ann Sampson and soon after, Garrett moved to Haskell where he continued his lifelong love of farming.
In addition to his 80 year calling of farming, Garrett served as at Trustee for Old Glory ISD; Old Glory School Board Member; and ASCS Board Member. He was a proud member of the 88th Masonic District Wichita Falls Lodge #635; and Sons of Hermann Lodge, first in Old Glory and later in Haskell.
He was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Haskell and Garrett was full of pride when he would tell the story of his Lutheran Confirmation as a young boy. His strong and unwavering German roots have always been evident in the Spitzer family and Garrett always felt honored his confirmation was completed in German. Something he was very grateful for.
He is preceded in death by his first wife Odine; and September 6, 2013, second wife, Martha; parents, Lillie and Friedrich Spitzer; brothers, Louis Spitzer, Herbert Spitzer, Bobby Spitzer, Johnny Spitzer; sisters, Virgie McGee, Lena Rueffer, Helen Laughlin, Mayme Glenn; step-daughter, Linda Burson and her husband Tim; two nephews; two nieces; and many relatives and friends.
Garrett is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Ann Seals and her husband Jimmy of Baird, Texas; sons, Kenny Spitzer and wife Sadie of Old Glory, Texas, Weldon Spitzer and wife Belynda of Tulsa, Oklahoma; step-daughters, Phyllis Letz and husband Danny of Old Glory, Laura Andress and husband Charles of Haskell; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Craig Letz, Chad, Ty, and Todd Spitzer, Amanda Settle, Ann Gimlin; 9 step-grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
If desired, memorials can be given in Garrett's name to Old Glory Cemetery Association; or a charity of your choice.
