Geraldine Russell "Gerri" Newberry, 89, a longtime resident of Rochester, TX, passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2019. A funeral service will be held at 1:30p.m., Saturday, November 23, 2019 at the First Baptist Church, Rochester with Rev. Rob Harrison officiating. Burial will follow services at Rochester cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. A visitation is planned from 6:00-7:00p.m., Friday, November 22, 2019 at the funeral home, 200 S. Lincoln Ave, Rochester, TX.
Gerri was born February 12, 1930 in Rochester, TX to Erma Faye (Hester) and Emmett A. Russell. She married Kenneth Newberry on July 16, 1949 in Rochester. Gerri worked in the Post Office in Rochester for 41 years, serving as Postmaster for over 20 years. She was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for her family. She taught women's Sunday School for many years. She was a life long member of Eastern Star where she held various positions. She loved to work and continued farming and gardening after she retired. Gerri loved spoiling her grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Mike Newberry and wife Diane of Lake Dallas; granddaughter, Lynn Cobb and husband Danny of Flower Mound; grandson, Kenn Newberry and wife Wendi of Rochester; great grandchildren, Wrett, Anthony and Kayla, Isabel, Tyler, Ashley, Katie, and Tyler; great-great grandson, Keith; two sisters, Nancy Flick and husband Bobby of Claytonville, TX, and Jo Ann Lindeman and husband Larry of Kress, TX; sister-in-law, Maxine Ingle and husband Tommy of Beeville, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Erma (Hester) Russell; father, Emmett A. Russell; husband, Kenneth Newberry; two brothers, James Aaron Russell, and Charles Vaughn Russell; and niece Mischa Davis.
