Gertrude Marie Wittenborn

March 24, 1918 — October 7, 2013

Gertrude Marie Kretschmer-Wittenborn passed away Monday, October 7, 2013 at Haskell Memorial Hospital in Haskell. Mrs Wittenborn was 95. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 11, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Haskell with Rev. David White officiating. Interment will immediately follow the services at Willow Cemetery in Haskell with Smith Family Funeral Homes officiating. A visitation is planned for Thursday evening, October 10 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The second to the eldest of 5 girls, Gertrude Kretschmer was born in Throckmorton County, Texas on March 24, 1918 to Martha Mary (Steinfath) and Richard Henry Kretschmer. Her father passed away when she was 12 and he told Gertrude to always take care of her mother, sisters, and the farm. This she took to heart and Gertrude remained on the same farm for 82 years. She married Otto Wittenborn in Stamford, Texas on December 1, 1945. She and Otto had 4 children together and Gertrude remained dedicated to her children, husband, and the farm. She was loyal to her entire family, and a very proud mother and grandmother. Gertrude was a wonderful cook and a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

In addition to the passing of her father Richard, Gertrude is preceded in death by her mother, Martha Kretschmer; husband Otto Wittenborn; and 3 sisters, Lillie, Erna, and Hilda.

Gertrude will be missed by her 2 daughters, Karen Sawey and husband Jim of Fort Worth, Judy Campbell and husband Bill of Eden; 2 sons, Leslie Wittenborn and wife Becky of National City, California, and James Wittenborn and wife Melyn of Haskell; 1 sister, Irene Ascher of Oregon, Wisconsin; 9 grandchildren, Christie, Robert, Jamye, Michele, Eric, Doug, Augustus, Ross, and John; 3 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Christian, and Evangeline; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and her very special four legged angel, Buddy.

If desired, memorials can be made in Gertrude's name to Trinity Lutheran Church, 7630 US Hwy. 380 E, Haskell, Texas 79521.
