Gracie Mae Reid Griffis, a woman known for her sweet smile, loving heart, and unforgettable personality, lived a life filled with family, laughter, and cherished traditions.
Born to J.L. and Irene Reid, in Eastland, Texas but shortly thereafter moved to Rochester, Texas. Gracie was raised by her parents who faithfully attended the Assembly of God Church in Haskell, TX where Gracie learned to play by ear the piano and the accordion. She attended Rochester schools before meeting the love of her life, Harvie Donald "Don" Griffis. The couple married in 1960 and began their life together in Rule, Texas, where Gracie worked as a typesetter for the local newspaper. They later settled in Weinert, where Don managed the Paymaster Gin and farmed, while Gracie devoted herself to raising their three daughters: Derinda, Donna, and Darla. The Paymaster Gin later became Griff’s Gin and Gracie could be found in the back office. Gracie never met a stranger. With her outgoing personality and wonderful sense of humor, she made friends wherever she went, whether traveling between Weinert, Haskell, and Abilene or visiting with neighbors and family. She had a special talent for turning ordinary moments into memorable ones.
A devoted grandmother, "Nana Gracie" delighted in spoiling her seven grandchildren and filling their lives with love. Christmas was her favorite season, and her home and front yard became a festive landmark, sparkling with lights and decorations that reflected her joyful spirit. She also enjoyed playing bingo and had a reputation for being remarkably lucky. Equally well known was her habit of arriving on what her family affectionately called "Gracie Time.”
Gracie and Don shared 54 years of marriage before his passing in 2014. Later in life, she lived in Haskell and eventually moved to Lubbock, where she enjoyed being close to her daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her beloved cat, Midnight. One of the many ways she expressed her love was by calling family members simply to tell them she was thinking of them and loved them.
Those who knew Gracie will remember her for her warmth, humor, generosity, and the joy she brought to every gathering. She was truly one of a kind, and her stories and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
She is survived by her daughters, Derinda Larned and husband Johney of New Braunfels, Donna Waggoner and husband, Randy of Lubbock, and Darla Lane and husband, Lee of Lubbock; her sister, Linda of Abilene; her seven beloved grandchildren; Trey, Mackenzie and Dylan Larned, Aaron and Garrett Waggoner, and Kaylee and Weston Lane, three great grandchildren, Ellington, Graham and Annistyn Waggoner; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Her legacy is one of love, laughter, family, and a life well lived.
