Hardy Day

January 17, 1929 — September 6, 2012

Hardy Day, 83, of Jamul, CA and former Knox City, TX resident, passed away Thursday, September 6, 2012 at Grossmont Hospital in San Diego, CA. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the Church of Christ in Knox City with Jim Hatcher officiating. Burial will take place immediately following at the Knox City Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. A visitation is planned for Friday evening, September 14, from 6:30 to 7:30 at the funeral home.

Hardy was born in Haskell, TX on January 17, 1929 to Roy Charles and Essie May (Stamps) Day. At age 18, tired of picking cotton, Hardy went to Nashville and landed a job picking the stand up bass for Cowboy Copas at the Grand Ole Opry. In the late 50's, Hardy knew and mingled with all the best including Hank Williams and Chet Atkins. Cowboy Copas died in a plane crash with Patsy Cline in 1963. At this time, Hardy had grown tired of life on the road as a musician and needed a new career.

He was called to serve with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged and returned home to pick up where he left off.

Hardy found work as a salesman in a business college and soon started San Diego College of Business. With plenty of time on his hands, Hardy was doing a lot of fishing in Baja, California. In Baja, electricity was unavailable or unreliable so in 1977 Hardy was in the market for a diesel generator, but soon learned there weren't many available at a reasonable price. So, he decided to build his own. After word spread and before he knew it, he was the world's largest direct supplier of small diesel generators. Seeing the need for alternative energy, in 2002 Hardy Solar was born and currently is an award winning ECO friendly establishment. Hardy developed a legacy that will last for generations to come.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Essie and Roy Day, Sr.; and 1 brother, Roy Day, Jr.

Hardy is survived by his wife, Lynn of Jamul, CA; 3 sons, Robert Day of Guadalajara, Mexico, Jason Day of San Diego, CA, and Loren Day of Jamul, CA; 3 grandchildren, Willie Day, Jessica and James Day; 2 sisters, Romaine Stubbs of Knox City, Dessie Egenbacker of Lubbock; 2 brothers, Bobby Day, Kenneth Day both of Lubbock, and Clyde Day of Albuquerque, NM; and many nieces and nephews.
