Hartsell Ash, Sr.

January 4, 1927 — December 27, 2014

Hartsell Thomas Ash, Sr., lifelong resident of Throckmorton, Texas, passed away at Garden Terrace Healthcare Center in Graham, Texas on Saturday, December 27, 2014. Mr. Ash was 87. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at the First Baptist Church in Throckmorton with Bro. Pete Bradfield and Rev. Peter Parker officiating. Interment will take place immediately following the services at Throckmorton Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Tuesday evening, December 30, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Throckmorton located at 107 N. Austin.

Hartsell was born January 4, 1927, in the Forty-Two community in Throckmorton County to Eva D. (McFadden) and Floy E. Ash. He entered the USCG-Merchant Marine's on March 10, 1945, and was honorably discharged July 15. He then married Oneta Ash on April 10, 1948, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Hartsell and Oneta were married 63 years until her death on December 1, 2011. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and a rancher and farmer.

Hartsell served with the Throckmorton VFD; past president of the Little League Baseball Association; Chairman of Pioneer Days; and Co-chairman of Texas Sesquicentennial Days Celebration. Hartsell built Ash Rodeo Grounds in 1959. His community involvement never went unnoticed and will truly be missed by many residents.

Along with his wife, Oneta, Hartsell is preceded in death by his parents, Eva and Floy Ash; 2 sisters, Modena Horry and Bobbie Ash; and a brother, J.W. Ash.

Hartsell will be missed by so many, but most importantly his family: daughter, Barbara Walker and husband Maurice of Throckmorton; daughter, Connie Ray and husband Gary also of Throckmorton; son, Thomas Ash and wife Renee of Throckmorton; and daughter, Dee Ann Herring and husband Mike of Burleson, Texas; 14 grandchildren, Reece, Rebecca, Russell, Terri, Wendy, Justin, Brady, Whitney, Shelby, Peyton, Saige, Monty, Matt, and Katy; 13 great-grandchildren; and numbers nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Ash are Randle Palmore, Phil Brewer, James Branch, Robert Branch, John Caldwell, and Bob Lloyd.
