Ima May Baker, 96, formally of Throckmorton, Texas and most recently of Schulenburg, Texas, passed away Tuesday morning, August 14, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 18, 2012 at the Smith Family Funeral Home Chapel in Throckmorton with Rev. Jay Gage officiating. Burial will follow at the Throckmorton Cemetery.
Ima Nicklas was born March 24, 1916 in Palo Pinto County, Texas in the family home on the Brazos River to Charlie Thomas and Martha Elizabeth (Hamilton) Nicklas. She was the youngest of 9 children. Ima attended school in Fox Hollow and graduated from Caddo High School in 1934.
Ima Nicklas and Dennis P. Baker married on February 4, 1939 and lived on a ranch in Palo Pinto County. Their son, James C. Baker, was born in 1940, and their daughter, Patricia Baker, was born in 1943. The family later moved to Breckenridge and then to Throckmorton in 1949. Dennis and Ima raised their children in Throckmorton and Ima resided there until 1994. During that time, Ima worked at several local businesses, including the First National Bank and Thurmon Furniture Store. She and Dennis were members of the First United Methodist Church.
Ima was an avid sports fan and enjoyed her role of scorekeeper for James' baseball team. She and Dennis attended high school basketball and football games and continued going to games after their own children had graduated from school. She was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and rarely missed a game on TV until the final years of her life. Ima and Dennis were instrumental in helping Faye Nichols establish a Senior Citizen Center in Throckmorton. Ima also loved to garden, and continued to tend a vegetable plot well into her 80's, and gained pleasure from sharing food with family and friends. She read her Bible daily and especially enjoyed reading the daily devotionals in the Methodist Upper Room.
She is preceded in death by her parents; all her siblings; and her husband, Dennis Baker, who died in 1980.
She is survived by her daughter, Pat Baker of Boulder, Colorado; her son, James Baker and wife Kaye of Richmond, Texas; grandson, Jimmy Baker, Jr. and his wife Holly of Houston; granddaughter, Stacie Whitley and husband Mark of Dallas; great-granddaughters, Lea and Anna Whitley, Edie Baker; and a large extended family including nieces, nephews and their families.
