Irene C. Bernal, 89, of Abilene, TX, passed away Saturday, October 22, 2016, at her home. A graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, October 24, 2016 at the O'Brien Cemetery, O'Brien, TX. A visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until service time on Monday at Smith Family Funeral Homes, located at 210 N Avenue A, Knox City, TX,

Irene was born October 20, 1927 in Alice, TX to Juana (Garza) and Manuel Castaneda. She lived in O'brien, TX most of her life and married Elias Bernal, Sr. She was a care provider and enjoyed crocheting, watching soap operas, and reading.

She is survived by three sons, Elias Bernal, Jr. and wife Maria of Abilene, Jesse Bernal and wife Irma of Acuña, MX, and George Bernal and wife Amelia of O'Brien; two sisters, Virginia Hunt of San Antonio, and Lucille Jimenez of Childress.

Irene is preceded in death by her parents and husband; three sons, Edward, Emelio, and Jesse; two daughters, Vicenta and Virginia.
