James “Jim” Weldon Benton, 69, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2026. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Willow Cemetery, with Rev. Rick Moeller officiating, under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes of Haskell.
James was born May 26, 1956, in Haskell, Texas, to May Belle and Jim Benton. Known by many of his family and friends as Indian Jim. In his early years, his family moved from O’Brien to Cleburne before eventually returning to the Haskell area to be closer to family.
James met Judy Lehde as a teenager shortly after returning to Haskell. Four years of dating later, they were married on December 19, 1977, and together they shared 48 wonderful years of marriage.
James was a devoted husband, an incredible father to his two children, Veronica and Emmett, and a loving “Pops” to his many grandchildren. For over 30 years, James worked for Haskell County Precinct One, operating heavy equipment, a job he enjoyed and took great pride in.
James enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved watching football and was a loyal Cowboys fan (through all the highs and lows). James was a skilled carpenter who could fix just about anything. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and had a deep appreciation for classic cars and classic rock.
He was a pillar of strength, always ready to lend a hand and always putting his loved ones first. Above all, James was a family man and a protector of those he loved.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Lehde Benton of Haskell, Texas; daughter, Veronica Benton Gerstner and husband Christopher of Odessa, Texas; son, Emmett Benton of Haskell, Texas; grandchildren Barrett and Aurora Gerstner of Odessa, Texas, and Beckham, Blakely, Chestin, and Ervin Benton of Rule, Texas; brother, Ben Benton and wife Connie of Haskell, Texas; sisters, Penny Benton Young of Potosi, Texas and Barbara Benton Haggard of Rule, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and May Belle Benton, and his brother, Dan Alan Benton.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
