Jay B. Gipson, Jr., 74, of Haskell, TX passed away Friday, March 5, 2021 at home after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 4, 1946 in Haskell, TX to J.B. Gibson and Iva Lee Robertson Gipson. Jay graduated from Haskell ISD and attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX and Sul Ross University in Alpine, TX.
In 1967, He enlisted in the United States Army where he did 3 tours in Vietnam. There he was honorably discharged in 1970 after being wounded. While in the war Jay received numerous honors and medals. After the war, Jay went to work for Bell Helicopter in Ft. Worth, TX. Then later moved to Abilene to work for Corley Wetzel Lonestar Trucking, LLC. He worked there right up until death some 40+ years as a parts manager.
Jay was a member of the First Baptist Church in Haskell. He also had a great love for horses and had trained a few in his days, and owned and traded many. Jay was always a fun loving guy and would give you the shirt off his back. He had lots of friends and will be missed by many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.B. Gipson, Sr and Iva Lee Robertson Gipson; and his sister, Norma Jean Gipson Childress.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Frances Gipson Lusk Binns and husband Joe of Austin, TX; 3 nephews Craig Childress and wife Terri of Osewego, Oregon, Chris Childress, Stephen Lusk and wife Michell of Lubbock, TX; niece, Shannon Lusk Kittley and husband Rob of Rule; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Willow Cemetery in Haskell, TX, Friday, March 12, 2021 at 2:00PM, under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes, Haskell. A visitation is planned from 6:00-7:00PM, on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at the funeral home, 304 N 2nd St., Haskell, TX.
