Jimmie Cyrus Johnson

Jimmie Cyrus Johnson of Elbert, Texas, known to many as Jimmie Cy, Cy, or Big Jim, was born April 3, 1934, in Olney, Texas. He went to be with the good Lord on September 24, 2026, in New Braunfels, Texas.

After his father died when Jimmie Cy was just 14, he began a lifetime of growing wheat and raising cattle. His wisdom in farming was precious knowledge that he passed on to his family – and will continue to be valued and implemented. Cy enjoying sharing his thoughts on life, faith and farming in many ways - direct instruction, stories with hidden or not-so-hidden meaning, and some in anecdotes – most of those known forever as Big Jim-isms.

On July 9, 1955, he married Noreta Cribbs. They shared 71 years of marriage together, and they made quite a pair. On dirt roads in Throckmorton County, a red pickup with two familiar outlines – a cowboy hat behind the wheel and her by his side – made many rounds feeding cows, checking wheat, and looking at the occasionally measurable amounts in rain gauges.

Jimmie Cy proudly served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Japan, a specialist working with early electronic radar network. Private First Class (T) Johnson returned home from his time in service to meet his daughter for the first time when she was 9 months old. Six years later, he and Noreta welcomed their son. They raised their family in Elbert, Texas.

Jimmie Cy is survived by his bride, Noreta; his daughter, Belinda Cooper, and her husband, Glenn; his son, Jimmie Cyrus Johnson II, and his wife, Barbie; his grandchildren, Wes Cooper and his wife, Paige, Cye Wagner and her husband, Kyle, and Ian Johnson; and his great-grandchildren, Davis Wagner, Conrad Wagner, Howsley Cooper, and Hank Cooper. A wide circle of extended family and dear friends will miss him, his grin and the sparkle in his eye before a good story was told.

A service celebrating Jimmie Cy’s life will be held Monday, September 28, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Elbert Baptist Church, where he was a lifelong member. He will be laid to rest afterward in Elbert Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider donations in his honor to the Throckmorton County Volunteer Fire Department, P.O.
