J.N. Cornelius

June 24, 1927 — November 10, 2014

Junior Newman "J.N." Cornelius, died Monday, November 10, 2014, at Haskell Memorial Hospital in Haskell. Mr. Cornelius was 87. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 14, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Haskell. Interment will take place immediately following the services at Rule Cemetery in Rule under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Thursday evening, November 13, 2014, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home in Rule located at 600 Robins Avenue.

J.N. was born in Shamrock, Oklahoma on June 24, 1927. He retired from the oil fired after working 36 years for Skelly, Getty, and Texaco oil Companies. Upon retirement, he enjoyed raising watermelons for a number of years until his health prevented it.

He held various offices in the Rule Methodist Church until they combined with Haskell United Methodist Church. He served on Rule City Council and enjoyed working a number of years in the annual Stamford Community Wide Christmas Dinner.

J.N. was an Endowed member of Throckmorton Lodge A.F. & A.M. 489 and also Endowed member of Rule Lodge A.F. & A.M. where he served as Master of the Lodge 10 times. He served as 91st District Deputy twice and was an Endowed member of Scottish Rite Bodies of Lubbock Consistory where he was a 33rd. He was a member of Rule Chapter #989 Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Worthy Patron 22 times.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He always told everyone to do the best they could and God would take care of the rest.

He is preceded in death by his father, Bert Cornelius; his mother, Rosie; one brother, Arnold in the Korean War; and sister, Ruby.

J.N. is survived by his wife of 65 years, Oleta of Rule; three sons, Paul and wife Jan of Grand Prairie, Texas, Richard of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Tommy and wife Debbie of Blackwell, Texas; one brother, C.M. Cornelius of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two sisters, Martha Long of Midwest City, Oklahoma, and Opal Ballard of Murphy, Texas He is also survived by five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers are Jessie Geron, Lyndle Reeves, Jeff Cornelius, Brandon Cornelius, Dennis Atkinson, and Brent Norman. Honorary pallbearers are Herbert Williams, Melissa Cornelius, Kenna Jae Cornelius, Garrett Cornelius, Dakota Donaldson, and Dalton Donaldson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given in J.N.'s name to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, 2222 Welborn St, Dallas, TX 75219, or your favorite charity.
