Joe Lindsey Self, 77, longtime resident of Throckmorton, Texas passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2016, at the Throckmorton County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, August 6, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Throckmorton, Texas with Pastor Jay Gage and Rev. Pete Parker officiating. Burial will take place immediately following service at Throckmorton Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. A visitation will be held Friday, August 5, 2016 from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm, located 107 N. Austin, Throckmorton, Texas.
Joe was born August 13, 1938 to George Truett Self and Helen (Dawson) Self on the R.A Brown Ranch in Throckmorton County. He married Carolyn Joanne (Cole) on April 30, 1965 in Nashville, Tennessee. He served in the United States Army and awarded Master Parachute Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Parachute Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct medal 6 Awards, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm 2 Awards, Civil Actions Medal and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
He severed as Boys Scott Club Master and was a 4-H Distinguished Volunteer, a board member of Throckmorton County Junior Livestock Show, and Throckmorton ISD School Board. He received the Chamber of Commerce Good Neighbor Award, was a TCBA Hall of Fame member, and 2016 Texas Ranch Round-up Trailblazer.
Joe loved cooking for any school fundraising events as well as for the county and community. He won numerous awards and ribbons at cook-offs. He was a die-hard Hound and Lady Hound fan, bleeding purple through and through. Because of his life long passion he was involved with the youth of this community. He helped groom many young people to be solid citizens, that care for the needs of others and live a life of servanthood for God, county, community and fellow man.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Truett Self and Helen (Dawson) Self; brother, George Self; and sister, Merina Welch.
Joe is survived by his wife, Joanne Self of Throckmorton, Texas; two daughters, Diane Balthrop and husband Charlie of Iowa Park, Texas and Marie Balthrop and husband Gary of Holliday, Texas; brother-in-law, Don Welch of Stamford, Texas; sister-in-law, Josie Self of Throckmorton, Texas; three grandchildren, Cole Balthrop of Abilene, Texas, Gage Balthrop of Holliday, Texas and Keith Balthrop of Iowa Park, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
