Johnny Wheatley

Johnny Wheatley, 87, of Haskell, Texas, passed away Thursday, February 25, 2021. A graveside service will be held at 11:00AM, Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Willow Cemetery, Haskell with Rev. Tony Grand officiating. Services are under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes.

Johnny was born September 4, 1933 in Haskell, Texas to Marvin and Reba (Dinsmore) Wheatley. He grew up in Mattson community and graduated from Mattson High School. He served in the Army from 1954-1956 as a medic where he was stationed in Puerto Rico. Johnny married Helen Grand in December 1959. He enjoyed working the land as a farmer and rancher and also enjoyed his time flying as a member of the Haskell Flying Club. He promoted agriculture with his involvement int the American Agriculture Movement, including the Tractorcade to Washington D.C., and as a member of the Soil and Water Conservation Board of Directors for eleven years. He served his community on the Mattson and Haskell School Boards and with the Development Corporation of Haskell.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years Helen Wheatley; children, Lynn and wife Jacklyn Wheatley of Haskell, Joe Wheatley of Haskell, Jonna Reynolds of Port Saint John, Florida and David Wheatley of Benbrook; 6 grandchildren, Brianna, Justin, Matt, Paige, Kalyn and Evan; 7 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and life-long friends Frankie Jo Baker and Margaret Ruth Rash.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Reba Wheatley; brothers, Marvin Joyce and Tommy; sister-in-law, Jerry Wheatley; grandsons Jared Reynolds and Jordan Wheatley; nephew Dale Wheatley and great nephew Brady Wheatley.

Memorials may be given in Johnny's name to the Haskell Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 761, Haskell, Texas 79521 or to a charity of your choice.
