Leon "Mr. B" Burkham, 79, passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at Abilene Regional Medical Center in Abilene, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 26, 2016 at the Community Center in Knox City, Texas with Mr. Joe Dale Wilson officiating. Interment will take place immediately following the service at Knox City Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Friday, March 25, from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., at the Community Center, located at 208 SE 3rd, Knox City, Texas.
Leon was born April 24, 1936, in Mount Vernon, Texas to W.E. Burkham and Edna (Lovell) Burkham. He went to Abilene Christian University where he received his Bachelor's degree and went to Sam Houston State University to receive his Master's degree in Education. Leon married Leona (Magee) on December 22, 1955, in Olney, Texas, and later they made their home in Knox City, Texas. He was a Vocational Agriculture teacher for 40 years, his first 2 years at Northside ISD and 38 years at Knox City ISD. Leon enjoyed fishing and being a member of his church, where he served as an elder. He was a lifetime member of Vocational Agriculture Teachers of Texas.
Leon is survived by his wife of 60 years, Leona Burkham of Knox City, Texas; two sons, Michael Burkham and wife Melissa of Yoakum, Texas and Bob Burkham and wife Angela of Canyon, Texas; one daughter, Gaylynn Covey and husband Greg of Stephenville, Texas; six grandchildren, Wade Covey, Ryne Burkham, Will Burkham, Lee Covey, Clay Burkham and Abby Burkham; four great-grandchildren; Izzabelle, Breana, Tyler and Wyatt.
He preceded in death by his parents, W.E. Burkham and Edna (Lovell) Burkham.
