Lillian J. Hicks of Rochester, TX passed away peacefully with her children by her side on Sunday afternoon Nov. 14, 2021. Lillian was the last born child of Minnie J. Coufal and Joseph W. Cerveny. Born April 23, 1927 in the Irby, TX community. She spent her childhood years on the family farm north of Munday, TX. After graduating from Munday High School, she enrolled the John Sealy College of Nursing, University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. In 1944 she became a member of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps. After gaining her RN license in 1947, she became a staff nurse at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. Her nursing career involved service as Head Nurse of Knox County Hospital, and school Health Nurse of Aspermont, TX ISD and Old Glory, Stonewall County for 33 years. She held membership in Delta Kappa Gamma for 39 years, Order of the Eastern Star, Rochester Literary Club, and The First Baptist Church of Rochester where she was Sunday School Secretary for many years.
In 1949 Lillian married Marion H. "Dee" Hicks of Rochester, TX. They had three children, Martha Ann (Hicks) McDaniel, Marion H. "Bud" Hicks, Jr., and John M. Hicks. She is survived by her daughter Martha Ann of Midland, TX and her son John Hicks of Rochester, TX. She was pre- deceased by her parents, her husband "Dee" Hicks and her son, "Bud" Hicks. She also leaves behind her grandson Jeff Webb and great-grandchildren Reagan, Max, and Kate Webb of Midland, and grandson Morgen and Abigail and their son Colton McGuire of Cypress, and grandson Chance McGuire of Los Angeles, CA, a son-in-law J.P. "Pat" McDaniel, of Midland, daughter-in-law Suzanne McGuire of View, TX, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family sincerely thanks Dr. Wayne Cadenhead and staff at Haskell Memorial Hospital and the staff of Haskell Healthcare Center for their loving care of Lillian in her final days.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Rochester, TX on Wednesday, November, 17th at 2:00 pm. Interment to follow at the Rochester Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. A visitation is planned from 6-7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at the funeral home, 200 S Lincoln Ave., Rochester, TX.
