Lois Allen Liles passed away October 17, 2015 in Olney, Texas, at the age of 100. Funeral services will be held at First Methodist Church, Throckmorton, Texas, Tuesday, October 20, at 10:00 a.m. Family graveside services will be held at Throckmorton Cemetery in Throckmorton, Texas, under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes.
Lois Ladelle Allen Liles was born June 11, 1915, to Hill and Johnnie Yates Allen at Miller Creek Ranch in Throckmorton County, Texas. She attended school at Brushy and Goree and lived until recently at the Elm Creek Ranch established by her great-grandfather, Mark Allen, in 1883.
Lois Allen graduated from Goree High School with honors and attended Tarleton Junior College, Texas Tech University and Texas Woman's University from which she received her degree in English in 1936. Lois valued education for her children and grandchildren. She sponsored each of her grandchildren's scholarship fund with no strings attached.
Lois was admired for her wonderful memory. She could remember names, numbers and the birth order of most of the people in Throckmorton and all of the family. If you had a question of lineage or a telephone number, you could call Lois. She loved to play Bridge and many of her dear friends were her Bridge friends. Only the loss of her sight dimmed her ability to play cards.
Lois aged gracefully, she seldom complained, refused to be sickly or rely on doctors or prescriptions. She made the decision not to drive and remained physically active and was able to walk three miles or more as an elderly woman before it became popular.
Even though Lois spent her life as the traditional role of mother, housewife, and caregiver, she was a liberated woman. She was a yellow dog democrat and stayed interested in state and national politics. Lois was a critical thinker and one of the founders of the '39 Study Club. She loved classical music and folk music. She encouraged her children to take advantage of the excellent music education provided by Mrs. Talmadge Falls and Hubert Carson. She often sang the old cowboy ballads of her youth as she rocked the babies.
Lois Allen Liles was a fearless world traveler. She toured England, Scotland, Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia. Her curiosity about other cultures and lands has stimulated her children and grandchildren to adventure as she did.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Stanton D. Liles, Jr.; oldest grandson, Clayton Dow Wright; and daughter, Diane Liles Wright.
Lois is survived by daughters, Ladelle Boyd and Virginia Garner; son Stan Liles; grandchildren, Will Wright, Matt Wright, Janet Kothmann, Glenn Boyd, Laura Parkinson, Mary Lois Nittmo, Jamie Garner, Aimee Hale and Juston Liles; and many great-grandchildren.
