Mary Anna Alvis Johnston, age 95 of Rochester, Texas, passed away on May 24, 2024, in Katy, Texas.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 pm Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the funeral home in Haskell, Texas, with gravesite ceremony to follow at 10:00 am, Wednesday 29, 2024, at the cemetery in Rochester, Texas. The gravesite services will be performed by Steve Willis under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Haskell, Texas.
Mary Anna Alvis was born in Rochester, Texas to Nena Elizabeth Hall and Isaac Ermine Alvis on February 24, 1929. Mary went to school in Rochester, Texas where she graduated high school. She later furthered her education by receiving an associate degree. She married James Robert Michael and had two children, Mack Wheeler Michael, and Kathryn Ann Michael (deceased). She worked as a secretary to the bank president at NBO Bank in Odessa, Texas for several years. Mary was selected to be the face of NBO on an advertising billboard prominently displayed on a busy street. She left banking and joined Odessa College where she ended her career after 15 years as the assistant to the business manager at Odessa College. Her first marriage ended in divorce after 31 years. Later in life, she married Lyndol Hugh Johnston on December 22, 1984. Lyndol grew up in Rochester, Texas. Lyndol was a lifelong educator and held various teaching and administrative positions throughout his long career. He passed away on August 16, 1999. Mary eventually moved back to Rochester where she belonged to the Woman's Club. She also was a member of the board of directors for the Haskell Hospital board for 10 years. Mary was a longstanding member of the Rochester Church of Christ.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Isaac and Nena Alvis, her brothers, Earl and Elbert Alvis, daughter Kathryn Read, husband Lyndol Johnston, niece Earlene Austin, and sister-in-law, Tempie Alvis.
Mary is survived by her nephew, Jim Alvis, sister Elaine Glover, and son-in-law, John Ben Glover, nephew, Chad Glover, niece Melissa Glover and niece Camey Ely, nephew John Ely, great niece Paige Glover and Meghan Shelton, great nephew, Brett Shelton, great, great nephews Crew and Cohen Shelton, great nephew Todd Austin and great niece Abby Austin, son Mack Michael, daughter-in-law, Teresa Michael, granddaughter, Megan Rhea Fears, grandson Bryan Fears, grandson, Zachary Michael, Danielle Grbavac, grandsons, Matt and Andy Read, great grandson Ethan Read, and great grandsons Parker and Hunter Fears.
Mary also had stepchildren from her second marriage. Survivors: Kyle and Cam Johnston, Ronny Jolly, Jamie Rodgers and JW, Tim Dixon, Kelly and Mickey Kieth, Jay and Karen Johnston. 16 grands and 30 great grands. The deceased include stepdaughters Pamela Carr, Cindy Jolly and Gina Dixon.
