Mary Nell McCoy, 91, passed away peacefully June 10, 2022.
Mary Nell was born July 4, 1930 in Noodle, Texas, the youngest and only daughter to Joe and Nannie Winter. She spent her childhood on the family farm with her three older brothers. She graduated from Merkel High School where she met the love of her life, Gerald McCoy.
Mary Nell and Gerald married on August 20, 1951 in her parents living room at 8:00 in the morning officiated by Dr. Witt of Abilene Christian College. The two began their life together living in Oklahoma at Central Christian College for several years before settling in Haskell, TX in 1958. Mary Nell was known throughout her community for her sweetness and beauty. Being the wife of an educator, Mary Nell had the opportunity to be a gracious host to many students over the years. She took pride in the four sons she and Gerald were blessed with. Whether it was baking a beautiful birthday cake, volunteering as a den mother, or pressing a perfect shirt, Mary Nell could often be found supporting her boys on their numerous activities. After the boys started school, Mary Nell spent her professional life working in the Haskell Clinic. Mary Nell and Gerald thoroughly enjoyed traveling both for leisure and mission work. From Camp Shiloh New York to Zambia, Africa Mary Nell was a servant to many. Mary Nell was a member of the Haskell Church of Christ. Mary Nell found such joy in her grandchildren. They will remember her by her love of doublemint gum, any and everything patriotic, trips to The Carousel, and the precious words they heard from her so often, "good gracious". Mary Nell was an active member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Mary Hall Mantooth Chapter.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her three brothers, Joe Winter, Norman Winter, and Harlan Winter; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Hollis and Velma McCoy; and a son, Mark McCoy.
