Milbert Eric Opitz

December 30, 1920 — May 16, 2014

Milbert Eric Opitz lifelong resident of Haskell, Texas passed away Friday morning, May 16, 2014 at Haskell Memorial Hospital in Haskell. Mr. Opitz was 93. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Sunday, May 18, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Haskell with Pastor David White officiating. Burial will take place immediately following the service at Willow Cemetery in Haskell under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes.

Milbert was born December 30, 1920 in Haskell to Laura (Klose) and Erich Opitz. He married Delphia "Ladelle" Welch on September 9, 1944 in Haskell where the two remained as Milbert farmed and they raised their family. Milbert was involved with farming and agriculture all is life. He also ran the country store in the Irby community for many years. He loved being around people and enjoyed drinking coffee with his buddies at Double A. Milbert was a member of the Sons of Hermann and Trinity Lutheran Church.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ladelle Welch and his parents, Erich and Laura Opitz.

Milbert is survived by his son, Dennis Opitz and wife Lochie of Fort Worth; 2 daughters, Christi Gardner and son Dan of Burleson, Texas and Betsy Langford and husband Scott of Haskell; brother, Carl Opitz of Dallas; sister, Emmie Overton of Lubbock; 8 grandchildren, Rob and Christy Opitz, Sean and Jana Opitz, Matt and Kristin Opitz, Kayla Gardner, Erin and Kobee Chapman, Emily and Ethan Charoya, Jason and Monica Langford, and Jodi and Mat Graven. In addition, his 5 great-grandchildren, Reagan Opitz, Connor Opitz, Crawford Opitz, Chloe Graven, and Henry Charoya; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. William McSmith, Angela Payne and the Haskell Experienced Citizen Center, especially, Jennabeth Kimbrough.

Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Opitz is Robert Opitz, Sean Opitz, Matt Opitz, Jason Langford, Mat Graven, Kobee Chapman, and Ethan Charoya. Honorary pallbearers are his coffee buddies at Double A, Jerry Don Klose, Loyd Klose, and Wilbert Klose.

If desired, memorials can be made in Milbert's name to Trinity Lutheran Church in Haskell or the Haskell Experienced Citizen Center.
