Neoma Pauline Kirby of Haskell, Texas passed away Saturday afternoon, December 21, 2013 at The Oaks at Radford Hills in Abilene, Texas. Mrs. Kirby was 89. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 27, 2013 at Willow Cemetery in Haskell with Bro. Morris Johnson officiating. Visitation is planned for Thursday evening, December 26 at the funeral home located at 304 N. 2nd Street in Haskell from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Arrangements were made under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes.
Neoma Pauline Lankford was born in Haskell on February 12, 1924 to Edith (Cox) and James R. Lankford. One of 10 children, all girls, Neoma was 3rd from the oldest in this large family. Growing up in Haskell, Neoma started 1st grade at Douglas School, east of Haskell, and continued her education in Haskell. She married J.B. Kirby on December 23, 1944 in Stamford. The two remained in the area where J.B. was a tractor mechanic and Neoma worked as the bookkeeper, although she was known to be right along side J.B working on a tractor. A faithful member of Eastside Baptist Church, Neoma enjoyed teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. Neoma enjoyed writing poetry.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, J.B. Kirby; her parents, J.R. and Edith Lankford; a brother who died at birth, R.J. Lankford; 4 sisters, Gladys, Ora Mae, Bell, and Rosie.
Neoma is survived by her 2 children; daughter, Jeanette Kirby of Midland, Texas and son, James Kirby of Elk City, OK; four grandchildren, Joe Kirby and wife Marcy of Midland, Robert Kirby of Florida, Michael Kirby of Elk City, Kimberly Park of Hawaii; 4 great-grandchildren; Kaylee Kirby, McKinzie Kirby, Christopher Baker, Braden Baker; and four sisters, Jean Dodson, Mirttie Irene Buner, Evelyene Graham, and Geneva Mills.
