Oleta Norman Baird, 89, passed away Friday, March 2, 2018 in Spokane Valley, Washington. A graveside service will be held at 2:00p.m., Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Rule Cemetery with Rev. Scott Hensley officiating. Services are under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes, Rule. A visitation is planned from 6:00-7:00p.m., at the funeral home, 600 Robins Ave., Rule, TX.
Oleta was born in Vera, Texas on June 11, 1928, to Newton Leonard and Elsie (Jones) Norman. She graduated from Munday High School and met her husband while working at the GI School office in Haskell. She married Oscar Boyd Baird on November 21, 1948 in the Baptist parsonage in Rule, Texas. They were members of the First United Methodist Church in Rule and active in the Emmaus community. Oleta enjoyed art and music and loved keeping up with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Oleta retired from the Texas Department of Human Services in September of 1993 and she and Boyd split their time between Rule, Odessa, and Spokane Washington until his passing in 2016, at which time she moved to Spokane Valley, Washington.
Oleta is survived by her brother, Newton Leonard Norman and wife Mary Lou of Boise, Idaho; son, Bill and wife Debbie of Odessa, Texas; daughter, Lisa and husband Will Ivey of Elk, Washington; grandchildren, Jennifer Frausto and husband Manuel of Aurora, Colorado, Rebecca Baird of Washington, D.C., Reagan Ivey of Elk, Washington, Tim Ivey of Amarillo, Texas, Michelle (Ivey) Wright and Kevin of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Michael Ivey and Alisa of Lubbock, Texas; great-grandchildren, Megan Frausto of Aurora, Colorado, Gavin Frausto of Boulder, Colorado, Nathan Wright of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Mason Ivey of Lubbock, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elsie (Jones) and Newton Norman; and husband, Oscar Boyd Baird.
