Agnes Ophelia Newsom, 84, and lifelong resident of Haskell County, passed away Thursday morning, January 10, 2013 at the Haskell Healthcare Center in Haskell. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 14, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Haskell with Mr. Dolan Brinson officiating. Burial will take place at Rochester Cemetery immediately following the services under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes.
Agnes Ophelia Wade was born February 5, 1928 in Rochester, Texas to George Martin and Mattie Leora (Goble) Wade. Ophelia graduated from Rochester High School and on May 3, 1947 married Grady Glenn Newsom in Haskell.
Ophelia devoted her life to her family and others. Along with being a wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, she worked in sales most of her life. She worked for Walton Drug and Jackson Drug in Rochester and Ben Franklin in Haskell along with The Hayloft and the Haskell Livestock Auction.
She was an active member and former president of the Haskell FCE and was chosen club Woman of the Year in 1996. Ophelia was a member of the Rochester Methodist Church and served on numerous committees, taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, assisted with youth, and sang in the choir.
She was an exceptional seamstress and loved sewing for her family and others. It brought her much joy and filled many hours of her life. More than anything, she loved the role of being a farmer's wife. She and Grady enjoyed 56 years of life together on their farm prior to Grady's death on March 20, 2004.
Along with Grady, she is preceded in death by her parents, George and Mattie Wade; 2 sisters, Beulah Hamilton, and Frances Wilson; 1 brother, Jack Wade; and son-in-law, Gary Faulks.
Ophelia will be missed by her 2 daughters, Kay Faulks and Betty Michaels, both of Haskell; 1 son, Glenn Newsom of Anson; 2 brothers, Sonny Wade of Llano, and Donald Wade of Haskell; 6 grandchildren, Cody Newsom, Ronnie Faulks, Brandon Newsom, Amanda Faulks, Melanie Lowrance, and Kyle Michaels; 4 great-grandchildren, Katelyn Sanders, Dylan Faulks, Drew Faulks, and Ruby Michaels.
