Oscar Boyd Baird, 97, passed away Friday, January 1, 2015 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas. Oscar Boyd Baird was born in Oxford Mississippi on January 30, 1918 to Charlie Baird and Minnie Elizabeth (McNeil) Baird. He attended John Tarleton College and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1941.
He taught Agricultural Education before entering the Army Air Corp on August 3, 1942 during WWII. His total time in service was 3 years, 2 months, and 15 days, of which 2 years and 7 months was in the South Pacific. He was in the 18th Combat Mapping Squadron, and then the 17th Photo Recon Squadron at time of discharge in August, 1945.
In 1945 and 1946 he was instrumental in establishing the Haskell Co. Veteran Vocational School, where he was employed until 1957, at which time he began farming and working at the Rule Co-op Gin.
On November 21, 1948, he married Oleta Norman in the Baptist parsonage in Rule, Texas.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Oleta, a son Bill and his wife Debbie Baird of Odessa; his daughter Lisa and her husband Will Ivey of Spokane, Washington; three grandchildren; Jennifer and husband Manuel Frausto of Aurora, Colorado, Rebecca Baird of Washington D.C., and Reagan Ivey of Spokane, Washington; three step-grandchildren; Michelle and husband Kevin Wright and Nathan of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Michael, Mason and Tim Ivey all from Lubbock, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Gavin Frausto of Boulder, Colorado, and Megan Frausto of Aurora, Colorado.
He was a member of Gideons International, active in Emmaus community, and very active in the Methodist Church in Rule, Texas.
