Paul Larry Harrington, lifelong resident of Throckmorton, Texas, passed away early Wednesday morning, May 21, 2014, at Hamilton Hospital in Olney, Texas. Mr. Harrington was 81. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 23, 2014, at the First Baptist Church in Throckmorton with Rev. Peter Parker officiating. Interment will take place immediately following the service at Throckmorton Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Thursday evening, May 22 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home located at 107 N. Austin.
Paul Larry was born December 20, 1932, in Throckmorton to Mary Lena (Smith) and Paul Silas Harrington. A graduate of Throckmorton High School, Larry entered the U.S. Army on December 15, 1953. He served for 2 years during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged from Fort Bliss, Texas on December 14, 1955. An international student representative, Larry attended the BSU conference in Nashville, Tennessee where Billy Graham was speaking. He met Peggy Jeanette Hahn and the two married January 25, 1958, in Golinda, Texas.
Larry began his education at Texas A&M where he ran track and helped his team to the SW conference where he ran a 4 minute mile earning a place in the Gold Medallion Letterman Association. He graduated Texas A&M in 1965 with a Masters in Mathematics.
He began teaching math at San Angelo State and then later worked for Shell Oil Company in Houston, Texas. He returned to Throckmorton in 1972 where he helped his father on the family farm. He continued to farm and taught math in the community for the area high schools.
Larry is a member of the First Baptist Church in Throckmorton, as well as, Texas A&M Lettermans's Association and Sul Ross. He became seriously ill this year and spent much of the year in Hendrick Hospital in Abilene.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary Lena Harrington; a brother, Ira Hugh Harrington; and sister, Kathleen Criswell.
Larry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Peggy of Throckmorton; a sister, Barbara Howard of La Porte, Texas; 1 nephew; and 5 nieces.
