Pete Murray

John Peter "Pete" Murray passed away at his home, Saturday, May 4, 2013 in Ruidoso, New Mexico. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 10, 2013 at the Logsden Chapel on the Hardin Simmons University campus.

Pete was born December 22, 1933 in Lubbock, Texas to R.J. and Helen Murray. He graduated from Arlington High School and earned a BBA and MA from Hardin Simmons University. While at HSU, Pete met Anita Louise Mullino and the two were married April 12, 1958. They were devoted to one another for the next 55 years. Pete and Anita have two daughters, Melissa and Melanie.

Pete was one of four NCAA Division I athletes to ever participate in 2 team victories on the same day; an afternoon football game in 1956 with HSU winning over Texas Tech and that same evening, a basketball game where HSU defeated Midwestern State University.

He coached at Brownwood High School for six years before becoming offensive coordinator for Texas A&I from 1966-69 during which time the squad went 35-8-0, won a national championship and was national runner-up. The Javelinas captured three Lone Star Championships during the span. In 1970, he took position of head football coach at Lubbock Estacado High School where he coached five seasons before taking a position at H.M. King High School. After being with the Javelinas 1976-84, he returned to King High School as Athletic Director and head coach until 1990.

Pete was a gifted athlete and coach. Honors he received include: Most Outstanding Athlete HSU 1956-57; Redskins training camp, 1957; Lubbock Avalanche Journal Coach of the Year 1970; Coastal Bend Coaches Hall of Fame 1993; Gordon Wood Hall of Champions 2009; HSU Athletic Hall of Fame 2010. In 2001, he was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame. He was also inducted along with the 1969 golf team; the 1969 football team; and the 1976 football squad.

Whether you met Pete for just a moment or knew him a lifetime, you were struck by his generosity, loyalty and commitment to his family, friends, colleagues, and student athletes.

Pete is preceded in death by his parents, R.J. and Helen Murray.

He will be missed by his wife, Anita; 2 daughters, Melissa Murray and husband Kirke Mechem and Melanie Gerzik and husband Glenn; grandson, Benjamin Gerzik; brother, David Murray; and 3 nieces.
