Roy Rebus Guess, longtime resident of Haskell, Texas passed away Wednesday morning, September 25, 2013 at his home in Haskell. Mr. Guess was 89. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Willow Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Immediately following, a memorial services in Rebus's honor will be held at Cornerstone Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Burgess and Rev. Morris Johnson officiating.
One of eleven children, Rebus was born January 20, 1924 in Mattson, Texas to Emily Belle (Weaver) and Rebus B. Guess. He is a veteran of the US Army serving in Germany during WWII. Rebus married Leora Stiewert in Haskell on December 31, 1942 and together had 2 beautiful daughters, Jennifer and Kimberlee. Rebus was the rural mail carrier for the USPS until retiring when he could devote more time to his cattle that he enjoyed and playing dominoes. Rebus adored Jennifer and Kim and his grandchildren and got much pleasure from singing at Cornerstone Baptist Church where he was a devoted member.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Rebus and Emily Guess; 2 brothers, Bailey Guess and Bob Guess; 7 sisters, Mabel Derr, Otie Bell Mayfield, Rita Hughes, LaVern Mayfield, LaVera Hummell, Jeanie Brown, and R.B. Guess.
He will be missed by his wife of 70 years, Leora of Haskell; his daughters, Jennifer Burgess and husband Brian of Haskell and Kimberlee Bassett and husband Tom of Haskell; 6 grandchildren, Casey Burgess, Bree Shaw and husband Tyler, Ryan Burgess, Aubrey Bassett, Crissy Bassett, Cash Bassett; 1 great-grandson, Luke Shaw; brother, H.L. Guess of Weinert; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
If desired, memorials can be made in Rebus' name to Cornerstone Baptist Church or Leuders Baptist Encampment.
