Richard Elihue Mathis, Jr.

June 21, 1923 — May 15, 2014

Richard Elihue Mathis, Jr., lifelong resident of the Haskell and Rule Community, passed away Thursday evening, May 15, 2014, at Haskell Memorial Hospital in Haskell. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 18, 2014, at the First Baptist Church in Rule with Rev. Scott Hensley officiating. Burial with military honors will take place immediately following the service at Rule Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes.

Born is Haskell County on June 21, 1923, to Lucille (Holcomb) and Richard Elihue Mathis, Sr., Richard grew up in the Judd Community. He graduated from Rule High School in 1941 and in 1943 from Tarleton State University in Stephenville. He married Billie Jo Woodward in Munday on October 15, 1943. Richard entered the U.S. Army December 28, 1944, and served as a sharpshooter in the Philippines during WWII. He was honorably discharged from Fort Sam Houston on March 10, 1946. Richard had a love of dancing and was a loyal member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, the Shriners and Sons of Hermann. He was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church where he was loved by so many.

He is preceded in death by is wife; Billie Jo Mathis; his parents, Richard and Lucille Mathis; step-mother, Callie Mathis; brother, Joe Douglas Mathis; sister, Zora Estell Mathis; and step-brother, Ray Mathis.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Jody Carrol Jent of Rule; son, Richard Van Mathis and wife Betty of Haskell; 5 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Mathis is Kevin Mathis, Terry Joe Mathis, Joey Mathis, Mickey Dunnam, Terry Threat, Russell Flannery, Michael Mathis, and Jerry Don Klose. Honorary pallbearers are Kenny Tanner, Harmon Mathis, Pete Kittley, Jim Bridwell, Jimmy Burson, Art Culpepper, Ralph Torres, Larry Simpson, and Sammy Simpson.

If desired, memorials can be given in Richard's name to the First Baptist Church in Rule; or the Shriners, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
