Robert F. Horan, Jr., longtime resident of Weinert, Texas, passed away Monday, August 11, 2014, at his home in Weinert. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 14, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Weinert with Rev. Dan Bullock officiating. Interment will take place immediately following at Weinert Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home in Haskell located at 304 N. 2nd Street.
Robert Fredward Horan, Jr., was born April 7, 1928, in Childress, Texas to Winnie Mae (Gollahorn) and Robert Fredward Horan, Sr. He married Bennie Griffis on November 4, 1950, at Weinert Foursquare Church. Robert joined the United States Air Force and after 21 years and 4 months, Robert was honorably discharged November 30, 1967, at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois with the rank of Master Sergeant.
Adding to his 21 years of military service, Robert also owned and operated a mechanic shop for more than 14 years, drove over the road 4 years, served as Secretary/Treasurer of Weinert Volunteer Fire Department for 5 years, and 11 years as City Secretary for the City of Weinert.
Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Bennie Griffis Horan; parents, Winnie Mae and Robert F. Horan, Sr.; sister, Frances Hackney; brother, Bill Horan; granddaughter, Shadella Foster; and grandson, David Boling; 4 step-brothers; and 4 step-sisters.
He will be remembered by his son, Robert F. Horan III and wife Daisy of Weinert; daughter, Patricia Horan also of Weinert; and his brother, Joe Horan and wife Maxine of Whitt. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christy Horan Hawkins and husband Joseph of Weinert; Trisha Horan Medina of Abilene; Douglas Boling of Weinert; Pennie Kaye of Haskell; 9 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Horan are Pete Trevino, Bill Walker, John Brueggeman, Johnny McNiel, Larry Brueggeman, and Michael Luna.
