W. Kenneth Roberts

W. Kenneth Roberts, longtime resident of Benjamin, Texas passed away September 24, 2013 at the age of 92.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 27, 2013 at the Benjamin Methodist Church with Jim Wright officiating. Burial will follow at the Benjamin Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. The family will receive friends at visitation from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 26 at Smith Family Funeral Home is Knox City, Texas.

Kenneth was born February 24, 1921 to Marvin and Lizzie Roberts in Mobeetie, Texas. He graduated from Mobeetie High School. He attended North Texas Agricultural College in Arlington, Texas for 2 years. He received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science Degree in Ag Education from Texas Technological College in Lubbock. He later completed a degree in school administration from North Texas State University.
Kenneth met Jessie Stoy while at NTAC in Arlington and they were married on February 15, 1941 in Crandall, Texas. Kenneth loved his wife of 72 years, she was his one true love. He also loved his children, grandchildren, great=grandchildren, relatives, friends, students, and his church family.

After college he worked for the Soil Conservation Service at Aspermont. He taught vocational Ag at Rochester for several years and then spent two years farming in New Mexico. He then returned to Texas to teach Ag at Benjamin. Kenneth had many successful state winning grass judging teams and was known as "Grass" Roberts by all Ag teachers across the state. He finished out his career as Superintendent of Schools of Benjamin ISD.

He was a longtime member of the Vocational Ag Teachers of Texas, a member of the Lions Club, the Knox County Water Board, Friends of the Knox County Historical Commission, and various other organizations. He was a longtime member of the Benjamin United Methodist Church.

As a member of the Knox County Historical Commission he was instrumental in getting the Knox County Veterans Memorial and the Wichita Brazos Museum and Cultural Center established. He spent many dedicated hours on the development of the museum.

In retirement, Kenneth and Jessie loved to travel, square dance, visit their grandkids, and do woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie, and his children; daughter, Nancy McGreger and husband Fred of Benjamin, son, Ken and wife Gaye of Wichita Falls, son Bill and wife Sue of Driftwood, daughter Pam Duke and husband Dennis of Benjamin, son Don and wife Diane of O'Brien; grandchildren, Chris McGreger, Mark Roberts, Kevin Roberts, Rebekah Duke Boone, Jennifer Roberts, Trish Roberts Johnson, Zeke Duke, Rachel Duke Faris and Angela Roberts Patterson, He also has eight great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his brother, Floyd Jack Roberts.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff at the Munday Nursing Center for their dedicated and loving care for Kenneth.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Benjamin United Methodist Church or to the Wichita Brazos Museum.
