Walter Kretschmer, lifelong resident of Haskell, Texas, passed away Monday morning, October 27, 2014, at Haskell Memorial Hospital in Haskell. Mr. Kretschmer was 88. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Haskell with Pastor David White officiating. Interment will take place immediately following at Willow Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Home. A visitation is planned for Tuesday evening, October 28, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home located at 304 N. 2nd Street.
Walter was born November 18, 1925, in Irby, Texas. He was the youngest of seven children born to Herman Christian and Mary (Steinfath) Kretschmer. He attended school in Irby, until the age of 14, when he bagan working the family farm for his ailing father. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy in World War II from 1941 - 1944. He was a fireman's mate on the aircraft carriers USS Bouganinville and Shangri-La; and, was detailed as a Shore Patrolman at Camp Elliott, San Diego, California.
Walter married Annie Marie Letz on November 19, 1949, in Lubbock, Texas. The purchased a farm on the Brazos River, and resided there for the first nine years of their 64 year marriage, before moving to Haskell. Walter was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a 70-year member of the Order of the Sons of Hermann, and a member of the local American Legion. He farmed in Haskell and Stonewall counties, and worked as a carpenter for over 55 years. He enjoyed playing Skat, a German card game, with his friends and relatives. Walter was also an avid hunter and fisherman, spending many happy hours in such activities, with his brother Herbert, son, grandsons, and many nieces and nephews. He could tell tales of his exploits with the best of them.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.
Walter is survived by his wife, Marie of Haskell; a son, Don and wife Julie Kretschmer of San Angelo; two grandsons, Cody Don and wife, Kambri Kretschmer of San Antonio, Texas; and Chad Alan and wife, Jessica Kretschmer of Uvalde; and great-randson, Sterling Cody, of San Antonio, Texas.
Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Kretschmer are James Wittenborn, Curtis Bittner, Joe Kretschmer, Glen Dudensing, Allen Weishuhn, and Don Reukema.
Memorials may be given in Walter's name to Trinity Lutheran Church, Haskell, Texas; or your favorite charity.
