William Elliott Harper

William Elliott Harper, 84, of Woodson, Texas, passed away Thursday evening, May 15, 2014, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 19, 2014, at First Baptist Church in Woodson with Rev. Peter Parker officiating. Interment will take place immediately following at Woodson Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., May 18 at the funeral home located at 107 N. Austin.

William was born May 6, 1930, in Homer, Louisiana to Sally Will (Roberts) and Jack Harper. He entered the U.S. Army in 1951 during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1953. He married Annette Louise Massey on January 22, 1958 in Hugo, Oklahoma.

The Harper's made their home in Woodson where Bill raised cattle and worked as an oil and gas operator. He served on the Board of Directors at First State Bank and a Deacon at the First Baptist Church where he has been a member for more than 53 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Sally and Jack Harper; and a brother, Bobby Harper.

Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Annette of Woodson; son, Clint Harper and wife Kathy of Seymour; 2 daughters, Janetha Venekamp of Woodson and Cindy Parker and husband Pete of Throckmorton; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Betty Noslaken and Virgie Reynolds both of Longview, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Serving as pallbearers are Leslie Stone, Kyle Buse, Teddy Clark, Henry Jones and Marty Venekamp. Honorary pallbearers are L.B. Atkinson, Larry Long, Jay Gober, and Stanley Beene.
