Wreatha Muriel Fitzgerald

Wreatha Muriel Fitzgerald resident of Knox City, Texas, passed away at Library of Legacies in Slaton, Texas. Mrs. Fitzgerald was 98. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Knox City with Rev. Jim Wright officiating. Interment will take place immediately following the services at the Knox City Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Thursday evening, October 2, 2014, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Knox City located at 210 Avenue A.
One of seven children, Wreatha Walters was born December 2, 1915 in Christovil, Texas to Maggie Ola (Hatten ) and Boley Conner Walters. Wreatha attended school in Brady, Texas and then on to nursing school where she became an RN. Wreatha worked in Fort Worth, Texas and in 1938, moved to Knox City and was a RN at the hospital. She later became the school nurse for the school district.
Wreatha married Alton Fitzgerald April 7, 1940, in Knox City. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was an active member. Wreatha was also involved for many years in the Retired Texas Teachers Association, Pink Ladies, American Legion Auxillary, and the Knox City Chamber of Commerce.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband, Alton who passed January 23, 1995; and one sister, Viola Richerson.
Wreatha is survived by her daughter, Donna Ricks and husband Claude; son, Alton Leslie Fitzgerald, Jr., and wife Zena; grandchildren, Lisa Teutsch, Terrell Cantrell, Gayla Bux Kemper, and Whitney Fitzgerald; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Wayne Walters; and 3 sisters, Pauline Cooper, Ira Kuzniarek, and Melva Nixon.
